The Blazers and Lakers have been tough rivals for more than a decade and because of the rivalry, games involving the two teams have very high stakes. Games tended to be played at the Staples Center have a bias towards the Lakers- the Lakers are favored for last second fourth quarter calls.
Take this video as an example of a Lakers-Kings game.
Today, it came down to the last 50 seconds. With the Blazers leading by five points, the Lakers got a three pointer by Kobe Bryant, but with a little help from a moving screen by Derek Fisher. At the other end, Andre Miller gets called for an offensive foul near the three point arc which seemed more like a blocking foul. The Lakers' next possession involved a blocking foul being awarded to them when the play was clearly an offensive foul on the Lakers. But the officials can't give the Lakers the win on a silver platter. The Lakers missed 3 of 4 free throws on their next possession and then Martell Webster was foolishly fouled on a three point shot, giving Blazers the win. Everyone needs a little luck now and then, whether it's from the officials or a slumping team.
